Reflections and Conclusions

Abstract The concluding chapter reflects on the conceptual, empirical, and policy-related contributions that this book has made identifies remaining unresolved issues. ‘Resilience’, ‘food system’, even security’ were seen to be elusive contested concepts. A food systems’ lens is more holistic than conventional preoccupations with agriculture prices, by highlighting for instance relatively neglected role of processors in security analysis. Global national systems are increasingly resilient, against shocks like COVID-19 lockdowns, but climate change raises fundamental challenges. Moreover, paradoxes remain, such as coexistence high levels undernutrition overnutrition countries where appear performing efficiently. Governments, international agencies, civil society, private sector, local communities all have important complementary roles play. But there difficult policy trade-offs negotiate: whether promote higher crop yields or lower volatility, instance, intervene taxing unhealthy foods (e.g. sugar), which could benefit consumers would harm affected farmers. Ultimately, at global, national, levels, well-functioning, sustainable equitable need deliver not only enough food, affordable access healthy diets.
